Gateway fees 8.5% by Kenya Wildlife Service

The newly introduced 8.5% Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) gateway card processing fee is a significant development affecting tourism in Kenya in 2025. This fee applies to all payments made via cards (Visa and M-PESA Visa card), which is now the only accepted payment method after the removal of bank transfer options.

The 8.5% charge is unusually high compared to other government or payment processing fees, creating financial pressure on tour operators and tourists alike.Effects on Tourism and Tour Operators:

The card processing fee increases the overall cost burden on tourists, which operators may have to absorb or pass on to clients, potentially making Kenyan safaris less price competitive.

Tour operators face challenges in managing their finances and pricing structures due to this increased transactional cost, especially for large group payments.
There is widespread dissatisfaction from tourism stakeholders, including the Kenya Tourism Federation, which has called for a review and reduction of this fee to align with industry standards to avoid stifling the tourism sector.

The fee implementation coincides with increased park entry fees, compounding cost concerns among travelers and operators.
Government and KWS Perspective:
KWS justifies the fee as part of a broader effort to bolster conservation funding, improve financial sustainability for wildlife protection, anti-poaching measures, community support, and infrastructure enhancements.
The new fees and payment system were introduced following a consultative process and parliamentary approval, aiming to modernize fee collection and reduce fraud or payment defaults.
KWS has assured facilitation for visitors with prior bookings and claims the changes are necessary for the long-term viability of Kenya's protected areas.

Summary:
The 8.5% KWS gateway card processing fee applied on all payments is a new, substantial additional cost in the tourism value chain in Kenya. While aimed at supporting conservation efforts financially, it poses significant cost challenges for tour operators and tourists, potentially impacting Kenya's tourism attractiveness unless reviewed or adjusted in line with industry expectations.
