Raila Amolo Odinga

Raila Amolo Odinga (born January 7, 1945) is a prominent Kenyan politician who served as the Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013. 
He has been a central figure in Kenyan politics, serving as the Member of Parliament for Langata from 1992 to 2013 and leading the opposition since 2013. Odinga is the leader of the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party.

He has run for the presidency of Kenya five times but has not won, alleging electoral fraud in each attempt. His most recent presidential bid was in 2022, where he was the runner-up to William Ruto. 

After the 2022 election, he challenged the results in court, which was dismissed, and pledged to respect the ruling.Raila Odinga holds a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, earned in East Germany in 1970.

He is known for his advocacy for democracy, transparency, accountability, and continental unity and prosperity. 

He has also been involved in initiatives like the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) aimed at increased power-sharing among Kenya’s ethnic groups, although the constitutional amendment based on the BBI was later declared unconstitutional.

He is active on social media, holds leadership in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and is well-known for his political activism and influence in Kenya’s political landscape.

Raila a prominent Kenyan politician and former Prime Minister, died on October 15, 2025, from cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kochi, India. 

He was 80 years old at the time of his death. Before his death, there had been many rumors and speculations about his health, but these were officially denied by his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which stated that Odinga was fine and any illness rumors were politically motivated.

He was a significant figure in Kenyan politics, having served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, led opposition parties, and run for president multiple times without winning. His death marks the end of an influential political career.
